Materials We Electropolish, Passivate and Polish

Electropolished stainless steel and nickel alloy parts at Harrison Electropolishing

The short answer: Harrison electropolishes, passivates, mechanically polishes and cleans the corrosion-resistant alloys used in process equipment: 300-series and duplex stainless steels, 6Mo super-austenitic alloys such as AL-6XN, nickel alloys including Hastelloy, Inconel and Monel, titanium, and carbon steel. Not every process fits every alloy. Stainless and nickel alloys take all four; titanium is passivated, polished and cleaned but not electropolished; carbon steel is mechanically polished. The pages below say what each material needs, which specifications apply, and what we can certify.

Materials

Stainless steel — 304, 316/316L, 17-4 PH, 2205 and other duplex grades. Electropolishing to ASTM B912, SEMI F17/F19 and ASME BPE; passivation to ASTM A967; pickling to ASTM A380.

AL-6XN — 6Mo super-austenitic stainless for seawater, brine and bleach service. Electropolishing, passivation and mechanical polishing certified as low as 4 µin Ra.

Nickel alloys — Inconel, Monel, Incoloy, Alloy 20, Nickel 200 series, Kovar and others. Passivation, polishing and oxygen cleaning here; electropolishing on its own page.

Hastelloy — C-276, C-22 and other grades. Passivation, polishing and cleaning here; electropolishing on its own page.

Titanium — passivation to ASTM B600, mechanical polishing and oxygen cleaning. Not electropolished.

Carbon steel — precision mechanical polishing of exchangers, valves, mixers and piping to a specified Ra. Not electropolished.

Which process does my part need?

If the requirement is corrosion resistance alone, passivation is usually enough. If the surface must also be smoother, deburred, brighter or more cleanable, electropolishing is the answer on stainless and nickel alloys. Where product adhesion is the problem, the Harrison C-75 process combines mechanical polishing and electropolishing. Components for oxygen or high-purity gas service are oxygen cleaned in any of these alloys. Send the alloy, the drawing and the specification and we will recommend the route and quote within one business day.

Electropolishing

Harrison Electropolishing, the Leading Electropolishing, Passivation, Oxygen Cleaning & Mechanical Polishing Company World Wide.

Electropolishing is an electrochemical process by which surface material is removed by anodic dissolution. Electropolishing removes surface material, beginning with the high points within the microscopic surface texture. By removing these points, the electropolishing process will improve the surface finish of a metal such as stainless steel, nickel, and Hastelloy, leaving a smoother and more reflective surface. Common parts and components electropolished include tanks, piping, fittings, rods, discs, large parts & surfaces, and more.
